What Fits in a 40ft Storage Unit?
40ft Storage Container — What Fits and What It's Used For
A 40ft container gives you 320 sq ft of floor, a footprint of 40ft by 8ft and around 2,400 cubic feet once you stack to head height. That is roughly three garages, and enough for the contents of a four or five-bedroom house.
What fits in a 40ft container?
- A four or five-bedroom house complete — furniture, white goods, garden machinery and several hundred boxes, with an aisle left to walk down
- Long items nothing smaller will take: extension ladders, scaffold boards, steel sections and timber lengths.
- A business archive on racking down both sides with a working aisle between
- A full exhibition, events or catering operation between bookings
- A landscaper's or builder's materials, consumables and tools in one place
What doesn't fit in a 40ft container?
Anything longer than forty feet, and anything that needs to stand taller than a standard container ceiling — 2440mm sheet materials will not go on end. If you need the length and the height, the 40ft high cube is the largest unit we have and adds roughly a foot of headroom over the same footprint.
Getting your things in and out
There is space to bring a removal lorry right to the door and turn it afterwards which can be a real constraint at this size, and one of the reasons customers with large loads end up here rather than at a site with tight access. Everything is at ground level: no lift, no shared bay, no time slot to book.
The doors open the full width, so wardrobes, sofas, appliances and machinery go straight in. Access is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The site is on the edge of Salisbury between Laverstock and Ford, five minutes from the centre and clear of the Churchfields and Southampton Road traffic.

40ft storage container — common questions
Is a 40ft big enough for a five-bedroom house? Yes. A four-bed goes in with room to spare and an aisle down the middle; a five-bed fits comfortably if packed sensibly.
Is one 40ft cheaper than two 20ft containers? Usually, and it is certainly simpler, one door, one rent, one uninterrupted space. Two 20fts only make sense if you expect to give one back.
Can a removals lorry reach a 40ft unit? Yes. There is hard standing and room to reverse and turn, which is often the deciding factor for customers with a full household load.
Should I take a 40ft or a 40ft high cube? Same 320 sq ft footprint either way. Take the high cube if you need headroom for sheet materials. The standard 40ft is right for household furniture and boxes.
Do many Salisbury storage sites offer a 40ft? Very few. Most run a largest size well under 320 sq ft.
