What Fits in a 5ft Storage Unit?

5ft Storage Unit — What Fits and What It's Used For

A 5ft unit is the smallest container we rent at our Salisbury site. It gives you 40 sq ft of floor. A footprint of 5ft by 8ft and 300 cubic feet of usable space once you stack to head height. In everyday terms, that is the size of a garden shed, or about a third of a single garage.

It is the size most people choose when they have run out of room at home but do not have a houseful of furniture to move. If you are clearing a garage to park in it, emptying a loft before a loft conversion, or freeing up a room, this could be the right size.

What fits in a 5ft container?
  • Around 50 medium boxes stacked to head height, with a narrow gap to reach the back
  • A full garden shed's contents — mower, strimmer, tools, pots, garden furniture
  • Bicycles for a family of four, plus helmets and racks.
  • Seasonal kit: Christmas decorations, camping gear, skis, wetsuits, a paddleboard
  • A single bed or bunk beds dismantled, a chest of drawers and several boxes

What doesn't fit in a 5ft container?
What it will not take is a three-piece suite, a full-size fridge-freezer alongside much else, or anything longer than about seven feet. If your list includes sofas or white goods, look at the 8ft container or the 10ft container instead — the step up in price is smaller than most people expect.

Getting your things in and out
The site sits on the outskirts of Salisbury between Laverstock and Ford, about five minutes from the city centre, which means you avoid the congestion around Churchfields Industrial Estate and Southampton Road entirely.

You drive right up to your own door. Everything is at ground level — no lift or stair and no booking a loading bay slot. A car boot or a small van unloads straight into the unit. You have access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

5ft storage unit — common questions

Is a 5ft container big enough for a one-bedroom flat? For a part-load, yes. For a complete flat including sofa, bed and appliances, no — a 10ft unit is the realistic minimum for a full one-bed move.
Will a motorbike fit in a 5ft unit? Usually not. The internal width is a little under 8ft and most motorbikes are close to that or longer, which leaves no room to manoeuvre it in. An 8ft or 10ft container is the safer choice for a bike.
Do I need to bring my own padlock? No. A reinforced steel padlock is provided with every unit.
How long do I have to take it for? One month minimum, unless we agree otherwise. There is no long contract, no deposit, and you can cancel free of charge any time up to 24 hours before your move-in date.
